A well-known employee of a former Dubuque restaurant plans to open his own restaurant in the same space.

Las Margarrita’s owner and operator Christian Hernandez says he is fulfilling his American dream by opening a new Mexican food restaurant in the former location of Salsa’s, 1091 Main St. He plans to open the restaurant in about two months after renovations are made to the kitchen and dining room.

Hernandez is developing his own menu that will include recipes developed by his mom, Martha Hernandez, and sisters Cindy and Gloria Hernandez.

New Bellevue BBQ restaurant opens
James Frank’s dream was to own a barbecue joint, and he recently made that dream a reality in Bellevue.

Frank celebrated the move of Bad Ash BBQ to its new home at 301 State St. with a grand opening Thursday.

The business, which involves Frank and his wife, Natalia, and son Christian, serves barbecue and accompanying sides from a food trailer parked at their house. For about three months, the trailer was parked in Savanna, Ill., on land Frank purchased along the town’s main drag. However, it quickly became apparent that its location was not safe for the droves of hungry customers who patronized the eatery due to a lack of parking and water runoff issues.

Romeo's Sighs and Juliet's Kisses
Truth be told, these buttery sandwich cookies with the romantic name had me at “Nutella.”

A culinary Valentine to Italy’s most famous star-crossed lovers, these chocolate-and-vanilla shortbreads are glued together, Oreo style, with a thick and irresistible layer of the addictive chocolate-hazelnut spread. As someone who can (and has) enjoyed entire jars of Nutella by the spoonful, I couldn’t resist taking the recipe for a test drive when I ran across it in Epicurious more than a decade ago.

The original recipe, which I’ve made many times over the years, wasn’t so Nutella-y. I’m embarrassed to admit that when I decided to bake the cookies earlier this week as an early birthday present for my kids, I made the rookie mistake of rushing through the recipe without actually reading it from start to finish.

Dubuque Millwork District pizzeria to open in late spring

A local business is opening a new pizza restaurant in Dubuque’s Historic Millwork District this spring.

Backpocket Dubuque, 333 E. 10th St., is planning to open Driftless Pizza Co. later this year in a space in the Novelty Iron Works Building that formerly was home to Gino’s East, a pizza restaurant that closed last year.

Backpocket owner Jacob Simmons said the new pizzeria’s location — which is right down an inside corridor from Backpocket — had been used as an event space throughout the past holiday season, and the intent had always been to transform it into a sit-down restaurant this year.
